18 movie recommendations to watch before Netflix pulls them off by July’s end

1. Ip Man (July 21)

Meryl Streep was nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars, and Julia Roberts was nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

3. Flight (July 31)

In this surprise addiction story, Denzel Washington plays “Whip” Whittaker, an airline pilot. A mechanical problem prevents a flight from plummeting thanks to Whittaker’s rapid thinking. The investigation that was required to be conducted revealed that the alleged hero was under the effects of cocaine and alcohol.

4. Julie and Julia (July 31)

Chef Julia Child’s cookbook contains 524 recipes, and Julie Powell (Amy Adams) vows to prepare them all in a year. The movie contrasts Julie’s life as she takes on this self-imposed endeavour with Julia’s life during the initial phases of her profession. The script was adapted by Nora Ephron from two books: Powell’s memoir Julie & Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen (later retitled Julie & Julia: My Year of Cooking Dangerously) and Child’s autobiography My Life in France.

5. The Pursuit of Happyness (July 31)

The Pursuit of Happiness, which is based on the same-named book, is a genuine account of author Christopher Gardner’s rags-to-riches journey.
