The 96th Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released the shortlists for 10 different categories.

Barbie’s pink charm to the Oscars

First among mentions is Greta Gerwig’s hilarious masterpiece “Barbie,” which is nominated in five categories: sound, original song (with contributions from Billie Eilish, “What I Was Made For?,” Dua Lipa, “Dance the Night,” and Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, “I’m Just Ken”), as well as original score (written by the latter pair).

Three categories see Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” receive nominations: Original score, Sound, and makeup and hairstyling.

Oppenheimer’s majestic glory at the Oscars

The selections include Universal Pictures’ eerie summer film “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” and A24’s unique “Beau is Afraid,” but “Barbie,” “The Color Purple,” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” failed to earn slots.

Notable submissions from the musical works up for grabs include “Oppenheimer” by Ludwig Göransson, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” by Daniel Pemberton, and “Killers of the Flower Moon” by the late Robbie Robertson. Distinguished veterans like John Williams (‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’) and Thomas Newman (‘Elemental’) are also included on the list.

This time, no Indian movie made to the shortlist.

One notable feature is the diversity of the composers honored like Jon Batiste (for “American Symphony”) and Kris Bowers (for “The Color Purple”), the esteemed female musician Laura Karpman (for “American Fiction”), and nonbinary artist Mica Levi (who was recognized for “The Zone of Interest” and was nominated for an Oscar for “Jackie”). Despite earlier rumors regarding its eligibility, Mark Orton’s selection for “The Holdovers” was a pleasant surprise that the branch praised.

The official nominations will be revealed on January 23 following the Oscar nomination process, which is scheduled to run from January 11–16.
