In the midst of a diplomatic spat with India, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau sent wishes for a “happy Navratri” to the Hindu community there.
“Happy Navratri! I’m sending my warmest wishes to members of the Hindu community and all those who are celebrating this festival,” he wrote on X.
The goddess Durga is honoured at the twice-yearly Hindu festival of Navaratri. It takes place over nine nights twice, once in the months of Chaitra (March/April) and once in Ashvin (September/October).
Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Khalistani terrorist, was killed on June 18 in a Vancouver suburb by unknown shooters. Mr. Trudeau publicly raised concerns last month that Indian operatives were involved in the killing. Both nations fired an ambassador after India dismissed the accusation as ludicrous.
Additionally, India halted the issuance of new Canadian visas and requested that Ottawa scale back its diplomatic missions there.
“We’re taking this extremely seriously, but we’re going to continue to engage responsibly and constructively within with the government of India,” Trudeau mentioned when the situation has escalated for the worse.
After recently discussing India’s relations with the king of Jordan and the president of the UAE, the Canadian prime minister received a tonne of online teasing for bringing up India with other world leaders.
