Affected by the issue of space of parking space of the vehicles, Amsterdam has now started off spacious and the largest-ever parking bicycle parking complexes. This is an engineering model crafted with the highest level of prowess and craftsmanship, it is a pioneering project built underwater.
The shelter is constructed below the Open Haven Front, which is an access tributary to the IJ river. The structure supports a parking space of around 11,000 bikes.
“Together the shelters will be the largest in the city,” the Amsterdam municipality said, with the Open Haven Front storage able to take 7,000 bicycles and the IJ-side site around 4,000.
The construction kicked off in 2019 and later added the draining section of the Open Haven Front adjacent to Amsterdam Central Station.
“We have a lot of knowledge and expertise when it comes to water,” Dutch deputy infrastructure minister Vivianne Heijnen spoke to AFP at the inaugural ceremony.
This storage “makes optimal use of the space you have in a small country”, she added.
Conveyor belts will carry the cyclists up to nine metres (30 feet) beneath the ground level, stated wUrck, the architectural firm who is responsible for the drafting the oceanic surroundings.
“The cyclist steps into an imaginary oyster with a rough exterior of basalt and natural stone and a smooth, light interior,” the firm added in a statement.
“Now you will be assured that you can immediately park your bicycle when you come to Amsterdam station,” the city’s transport alderwoman Melanie van der Horst stated.
