At the Oval on Sunday, Australia defeated India by a score of 209 runs to claim the 2023 World Test Championship. When the day started, India was still in the game, but they lost ground after Virat Kohli and Rahane both crashed to the ground.
Shardul Thakur and Ravindra Jadeja could not provide much resistance and were both regarded as ducks. The best bowler was Nathan Lyon, who was well-supported by Scott Boland, who claimed three wickets, including those of Kohli and Jadeja.
A focused Kohli was all that stood between Australia and the World Test Championship at the start of the fifth and final day, with India needing another 280 runs to make history.
India was given a huge mark to reach, but lost Shubman Gill (18 off 19) to a disputed catch before captain Rohit Sharma (43 off 60) and Cheteshwar Pujara (27 off 47) caused their own demise to make it 93 for three in the 31st over.
After an unbeaten 66 by Alex Carey, Australia had announced their second innings at 270 for 8 halfway through the afternoon session.
Rohit and Gill, the Indian openers, got things going quickly. The majority of Rohit’s runs came through pull-shots. In the 20th over, Lyon was introduced into the attack to break the partnership between Rohit and Pujara, and he succeeded. Rohit then unsuccessfully attempted to review the leg prior to the call.
Pujara was the next to leave, and he made an out-of-character shot by trying to hit a ramp shot off Cummins and getting left behind. Pujara’s 47-ball effort included some assured strokes from him as well.
