The leader of the Awami League and prime minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, was re-elected to parliament on Sunday from the Gopalganj-3 constituency. The general elections were marked by intermittent violence and a boycott by the main opposition party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

Hasina, 76, received 249,965 votes, compared to just 469 for her closest opponent, M Nizam Uddin Lashkar of the Bangladesh Supreme Party, according to bdnews24.

The outcome was declared by Kazi Mahbubul Alam, the returning officer and deputy commissioner for Gopalganj.

Since 1986, she has won the Gopalganj-3 seat eight times.

Since taking office in 2009, Prime Minister Hasina of the strategically positioned South Asian country is expected to win a record-tying fourth consecutive term as well as her fifth overall.

Based on the preliminary results, the candidates of the ruling Awami League are ahead in the majority of the seats.

In the past, the general elections saw a low voter turnout; the counting of votes began after the polls closed.

The first estimates of voter turnout were about 40%, but Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal stated that the final count may have changed the percentage.
