It was alleged that under unexplained circumstances, the deputy editor of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “favourite newspaper” was found dead at home. 35-year-old Anna Tsareva was employed by the pro-Putin newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda. Only a year after her old boss also passed away suspiciously, she was discovered unconscious at her Moscow residence.

After losing communication with her for a few days, Anna Tsareva’s father went to check on her and found her dead, they said. She did not exhibit any “signs of a violent death” or an apartment break-in, but she had a high temperature and an acute respiratory virus illness for several days.

She may have had “acute heart failure” when she passed away.

The largest news website in Russia, Komsomolskaya Pravda, reportedly had 83.9 million readers in October 2023, and Anna Tsareva was in charge of content.

Vladimir Sungorkin, 68, the chief editor and director general of Komsomolskaya Pravda, was her boss and passed away from what appeared to be a heart attack last year. After it was stated that doctors had discovered symptoms of asphyxia, his death had been viewed as strange.

In one of Russia’s most well-known media outlets, Vladimir Sungorkin was charged with “disseminating and legitimizing aggressive anti-Ukraine and anti-Western propaganda of the Putin regime under direct Kremlin authority.”

The commission averred, “The newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda has been described also by President Vladimir Putin as his favourite newspaper. Its editor is therefore responsible for supporting actions and policies which undermine the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine.”
