According to a survey by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, registered voters in Georgia continue to favor former US President Donald Trump over his successor, Joe Biden, by eight percentage points. The survey also reveals that 45 percent of Peach State voters would support the Republican, compared to 37 percent who would support the Democratic incumbent, if the presidential elections were held today.
For the first time in nearly 30 years of Republican domination, Biden turned Georgia blue in 2020; the poll serves as a warning. Remarkably, Trump secured his first 20 delegates in the GOP primary after securing 51% of the vote in the Iowa Caucus.
There are more Republican voters registered in Georgia than Democratic voters, so even if Biden maintains his lead among independents and moderates, his support won’t be enough to reverse Trump’s edge there.
What is the reason for Biden’s struggles?
Many Democratic and independent voters who were crucial to Biden’s tight victory over Trump in Georgia in 2020—including 10% of Black voters who say they won’t be voting at all in the White House race—don’t support him. More than 62% of registered voters are unhappy with the president’s performance in office, and a slim majority of them “strongly disapprove” of the Democrat.
Unfortunately for Biden, his support from independents is “dismal.” Of these, only 37% find him admirable and 54% are dissatisfied with his work.
Is Trump on a tough spot?
The former US president faces challenges of his own in a state where he has waged war on Republican incumbents who have resisted his calls to void the election results in 2020. About 25% of Republicans claim to be unsure or doubtful of the strategy to back Trump’s reelection.
In one of the four pending criminal court proceedings involving Trump, he and eighteen former associates are charged with violating the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act by attempting to sway the results of the 2020 election in Georgia.
