India’s captain Rohit Sharma acknowledged that it was difficult for him to watch the Edgbaston Test from the sidelines as the team he was to captain lost by seven wickets, wasting a chance to secure an elusive series win in England. In the lead-up to the England series, Rohit caught COVID-19. He admitted that he suffered with his symptoms for the first couple of days, but that his health steadily improved over the past few days, allowing him to play in the upcoming white-ball series.

“It was very hard to watch [the Test match] from the sidelines,” Rohit said on Wednesday (July 6). “It’s never an easy situation when you miss games, especially an important game like that, where the series was on the line for us. But speaking of the symptoms, for a couple of days I was struggling a little bit. But I’m happy that I’m standing back on my feet, nice and healthy as I look forward to this T20 series, obviously followed by the ODI series as well. It’s always nice to get back to playing, that’s the most important thing. I’m excited to get back on the field and get going with the guys.

“My recovery has been very good. It’s been 8-9 days since I got COVID. We’ve seen that every player that gets COVID respond differently. I don’t know what’ll happen in the future but it all looks good now. I started training three days ago. That’s why I decided to play in this game, because body wise I feel good. Also I have no symptoms, [got] tested two-three times also, they’re all negative.”
