Amid recent tensions between India and the Maldives, a major decision has been made by The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE). Due to their disapproval of derogatory remarks about PM Narendra Modi by Maldives ministers. As a result, FWICE has called for a boycott of film shoots in the Maldives. The film industry workers’ union released an official statement, asking filmmakers to explore shooting in ‘similar locations in India.’

FWICE (Federation of Western India Cine) statement

The oldest and largest federal body FWICE which represents workers, technicians, and artists in the media and entertainment industry, strongly disapproved of the irresponsible comments made by Maldives ministers on the globally respected Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Hence with the nation and its diverse culture, FWICE members have jointly decided to boycott the Maldives as a shooting location.

As an alternative, they encourage filmmakers to take up shooting in comparable locations within India, So that it can contribute to the development of tourism in the country. The official statement released by them reads, “All the producers in India and over the globe are hereby advised not to plan any shootings or production activities in the Maldives. We all stand in strong support towards our Prime Minister and our Nation.”

This move about boycotting the Maldives has taken India after some influential figures from the Maldives made mocking remarks about India and PM Narendra Modi’s visit to the Lakshadweep Islands. Recently PM Modi also promoted the Indian islands, sharing pictures of his visit showing active part in activities like snorkeling, After which celebrities rushed to support him. Notable figures such as Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, and Shraddha Kapoor have since been actively promoting the beauty of Indian islands like Lakshadweep.
