Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the acceptance of the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration on Saturday, marking a significant success for India’s G20 presidency amid rising tensions and conflicting opinions over the Ukraine war.

The proclamation expressed grave concern about the tremendous suffering caused by war and strife across the world. A fresh wording to characterise the war in Ukraine was distributed to the G20 nations by India hours before the announcement of the consensus on the declaration and the subsequent acceptance of it.

The G20 leaders’ consensus statement encouraged all nations to “refrain from the threat of use of force to seek territorial acquisition” or to act against the territorial integrity of any state. It also called for a “comprehensive, just, and durable peace in Ukraine”. Nuclear weapons use or threat of use were emphasised as being “inadmissible” un the declaration.

Additionally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), a worldwide action plan intended to protect the globe from the catastrophic effects of climate change, was included in the proclamation. “We will urgently accelerate our actions to address development and climate challenges, promote Lifestyles for Sustainable Development (LiFE), and conserve biodiversity, forests and oceans,” it read.
