Volker Wissing, Germany’s Federal Minister for Digital and Transport, had the opportunity to personally test the ease of UPI (Unified Payments Interface) payments and was “fascinated” by the encounter. On Sunday, the German Embassy in India praised and referred to India’s digital infrastructure as one of the nation’s success stories on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Mr. Wissing was seen using UPI to pay for his purchases in videos and pictures that were published by the German embassy in India.
The caption read, “One of India’s success story is digital infrastructure. UPI enables everybody to make transactions in seconds. Millions of Indians use it. Federal Minister for Digital and Transport @Wissing was able to experience the simplicity of UPI payments first hand and is very fascinated!”
On August 19, Mr. Wissing was in Bengaluru for the G20 Digital Ministers Meeting.
Social media users responded to the message by thanking Mr. Wissing for contributing to India’s digital economic revolution. Someone wrote, “Thank you for being part of India’s digital economic revolution. Keep sharing and using.”
“It will be a blessing for German merchants and shopgoers in Germany, which are struggling with cash-only transactions,” another added. “UPI goes Global! when is Germany joining the UPI platform?” asked another.
Notably, India’s quick payment mechanism is called Unified Payments Interface (UPI). It enables users to quickly make payments around-the-clock. It makes use of a Virtual Payment Address (VPA) that the consumer established.
India has so far collaborated on cutting-edge fintech and payment solutions with Sri Lanka, France, the United Arab Emirates, and Singapore. India and France have agreed to deploy the UPI payment system, according to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s earlier July announcement.
