Dev Anand is a legendary actor who charmed everyone with his charisma. Additionally, he charmed tens of thousands of viewers with his flicks and equally astounded them off-screen. In order to fight against the atrocities, Dev not only spoke out against the government-sponsored persecution that the film industry endured during the 1975 Emergency; he also started his own party.
Dev Anand founded a party to oppose Indira Gandhi
Dev Anand led a coalition of movie stars against Indira Gandhi during the 1977 elections, two years after the Emergency was declared. He established the National Party of India as well. However, it was eventually dissolved since he was unable to identify qualified people to run in elections.
Dev Anand called Emergency a ‘nightmare’
A 1977 India Today report, stated that the actor has called this emergency a “dark night, a nightmare, an insult to the people”.
The actor in an interview with a magazine told, “I got the impression that my problems would be solved if I canvassed for the candidate”.
Director Shekhar Kapur penned down, “Dev Anand was more than a star, he believed and was unafraid to fight for what he believed in. He came out against the emergency and Indira Gandhi at a time when it was the surest way to prison. He even took out processions fighting against the Emergency.”
