The Election Commission moved the Mizoram vote-counting date to December 4 on Friday. The poll sent out an official notification after making its decision. On December 3, there was going to be a vote count for every assembly constituency in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and Mizoram.

But the Election Commission said in a statement released on Friday that it had received “several representations from various quarters” in Mizoram asking for a review of the vote-counting procedure on December 3. “The Commission has received several representations from various quarters requesting for change in date of counting from 3rd December, 2023 (Sunday) to some other week day, on the ground that 3rd December, 2023 being Sunday a special significance for the people of Mizoram,” the statement added.

“The Commission, having considered these representations, has decided to revise the date of counting for the General Election to the Legislative Assembly of Mizoram from 3rd December, 2023 (Sunday) to 4th December, 2023 (Monday),” the Election Commission added.

At first, Mizoram’s election commission followed the December 3rd deadline for counting votes, just like it did for Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, and Telangana. The electoral commission was asked to reevaluate the counting date by a number of well-known political parties, civil society organizations, and other groups because it fell on a Sunday, which is also a day for church activities.

The Mizoram chief election officer, Madhup Vyas, told PTI that the public is not needed to participate in the vote counting process. Later on, though, this choice was modified.

On November 7, the 40-member Mizoram legislature was elected, and out of the 8.57 lakh eligible voters, over 80% turned out to vote.
