India is all set to make history again. It sent its second sojourn to the moon, Chandrayaan-2 on July 15 by Indian Space Research Organisation. According to the ISRO, it will be the most complex mission ever undertaken by it. With the help of our biggest rocket ever, the GSLV Mk III, it got launched. We also know that the mission will be led by an all-woman team, but do you know how much it costs? Well, here is a hint – it costs less than what it took to make the last Avengers movie!

Yes, you read it right! According to the reports, the total cost behind the Chandrayaan-2 mission is about $124 million (approximately Rs 850 crores). This includes the ‘$31 million (approx Rs 123 crore) price tag for the launch and $93 million (approx Rs 637 crores) for the satellite’. On the other hand the Hollywood Blockbuster Avengers: Endgame cost about $356 million (Rs 2,441 crores) to be made.

It means it was three times more than the budget India used for making Chandrayaan-2 mission. Interestingly in 2014, India’s Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) was also said to be the most cost-effective as Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that our Mars mission cost less than the Hollywood movie ‘Gravity.’ According to him, “Our scientists have shown the world a new paradigm of engineering and the power of imagination.”

To let you know, the approximate budget of Mars Orbitor Mission was $74 million (approx Rs 507 crore) whereas the Sandra Bullock-starrer movie Gravity took over $100 million (approx Rs 687 crores) to complete. This is really impressive of our space scientists that they made every mission cost-effective. We hope for the successful launch of Chandrayaan-2.
