On February 1, Finance Minister Nirmala Sithraman will deliver her budget for the sixth time in a row. She is about to accomplish a unique feat: after Morarji Desai, she would only be the second Finance Minister in the nation to have delivered the Union Budget for six years running.
Since July 2019, Ms. Sitharaman has led the finance ministry, becoming the nation’s first full-time female finance minister. This will be her first Interim Budget; she has already delivered five complete budgets.
She will break the milestones set by her predecessors, including Manmohan Singh, Arun Jaitley, P Chidambaram, and Yashwant Sinha, who all presented five consecutive full budgets, after the Interim Budget is presented.
Between 1959 and 1964, Morarji Desai—who would go on to become Prime Minister—presented five yearly budgets and one interim budget. In addition, he has the extraordinary distinction of being the Finance Minister of India with the most budgets presented—ten to be exact.
Until the next government takes office, the Interim Budget will assist in controlling government spending.
