The 9th International Yoga Day was celebrated on Wednesday morning with greetings from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who also called the gathering of more than 180 nations at India’s request “historic.” The prime minister will take part in a yoga class held at the UN headquarters while he is in the US on a state visit.

The Guinness World Record for having the most countries participate in a yoga session was set on Wednesday at the Yoga Day event hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

“At around 5:30 pm IST, I will participate in the Yoga program which is being organised at the headquarters of the United Nations. The coming together of more than 180 countries on India’s call is historic. When the proposal for Yoga Day came to the United Nations General Assembly in 2014, it was supported by a record number of countries,” PM Modi posted in a video message to the people on Wednesday morning.

Diplomats, officials, academicians, health professionals, technocrats, industry leaders, media figures, artists, spiritual leaders, and yoga practitioners are just a few of the influential people that will be present at the event. The PM for Yoga Day programme will draw participants from more than 180 nations.
