Discussions on the effectiveness of vaccines of Covaxin, Covishield against new variant of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron is going on. What WHO has to say on this. Read to know.
We are now hearing about a new variant of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron, these days. That is coming from South Africa including some other countries as well. So amid this India is also apprehended. And now prime minister Narendra Modi is instructing the officials to review the guidelines of international travel. Amid all this, there are also discussions on the effectiveness of vaccines of Covaxin, Covishield against new variant of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron.
So on this, the head of epidemiology and communicable diseases division Dr. Samiran Panda said that it is quite skeptical if the vaccines will be effective against the new variant Omicron. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research, the two vaccines Covishield and Covaxin build immunity through a different system. And therefore a lot of things still need to be observed.
What WHO has to say?
As per the World Health Organization (WHO). Very less is known about this variant, and in connection to this the studies are still going on. However, it is the one that is believed to be more transmissible. Adding further WHO said we need some time to take take a notice. If this variant increase infection and leads to excessive deaths. So far scientist found 10 mutations of omicron. which means that more the mutation more is the chance of transmission. But the further observations will prove, if its deadly or not.
Talking about its effect in India. Currently there are no cases of this variant. But as a precationary measure, the centre is urging all the states to be alert. And for this reason the sates are now deciding to put more restrictions for those who are International travellers.
