The creator of the Drishyam franchise, Jeethu Joseph, has denied all allegations that the main concept of Drishyam 3 has been decided upon and that the Malayalam and Hindi crews want to shoot the films concurrently. He was adamant that no precise plot lines for the films have yet been chosen by the production team.
In conversation with Cue Studio, Jeethu averred: “The reports claiming that a fitting script has been identified for Drishyam 3 are baseless. As of now, no decisions have been made regarding the project.”
“There is no truth to the rumours suggesting that we are also actively listening to stories and scripts for Drishyam 3 from outsiders. While Drishyam 3 is indeed being contemplated, it is important to emphasise, as I have previously mentioned, that the film will only proceed if we can develop a script that aligns with its various aspects,” the filmmaker added.
“I definitely am contemplating the possibility of Drishyam 3 and am putting in efforts to materialise it. However, I have not yet reached a point where I can confidently embark on writing its script. As a result, no concrete decisions have been made regarding the start of its filming or the approach we will take. Consequently, no decision has been taken regarding the possibility of shooting the film simultaneously with another project (the Hindi version of Drishyam 3),” Jeethu affirmed.
On Tuesday, Pinkvilla “exclusively learnt that Drishyam 3 has gotten into the development stage and it is proving to be a collaboration between the creators in Hindi and Malayalam.”
“Abhishek Pathak and his team of writers have cracked a basic core plot for Drishyam 3, which Jeethu Joseph and his team loved. They have taken the idea from the team of Hindi Drishyam and are now working towards developing it into a screenplay for Drishyam 3,” Pinkvilla said.
“The idea is to have Drishyam 3 shot together and release them on the same date all across India. While Kerala will see the release in Malayalam with Mohanlal as George Kutty, the rest of India will get to see the journey of Ajay Devgn as Vijay Salgaonkar. Once the screenplay is locked, the Telugu Drishyam producers also might join the plan of simultaneous release all across on the same date,” Pinkvilla further stated.
Despite Jeethu Joseph consistently claiming that no decision has been made regarding Drishyam 3 as of yet since the franchise’s second installment’s release in 2021, the report has come to light.
The first Drishyam film was released in 2013, and the series has since become one of the most influential and lucrative in Indian film history. The movie, which featured Mohanlal, Meena, and Asha Sarath, was directed and written by Jeethu Joseph and was a box office triumph. Due to its success, four additional Indian languages saw remakes of the film: Drishya (2014) in Kannada, Drushyam (2014) in Telugu, Papanasam (2015) in Tamil, and Drishyam (2015) in Hindi.
Jeethu Joseph started working on the Malayalam sequel after all of these films had such a positive response in their respective fields. Audience reaction to Drishyam 2, which was released directly to OTT, was overwhelmingly positive. As a result of its popularity, the Malayalam sequel was also recreated in Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi, with the titles Drushyam 2 (2021), Drishya 2 (2021), and Drishyam 2 (2022), respectively. There haven’t been any news for a Tamil adaptation, though.
The Hindi adaptations of the Drishyam films, starring Ajay Devgn, Tabu, and Shriya Saran in the key parts, were made by the late directors Nishikant Kamat (Drishyam) and Abhishek Pathak (Drishyam 2), while Jeethu Joseph himself helmed Papanasam and Drushyam 2.
A cooperation for the Korean version of the Drishyam series was recently announced by the South Korean production banner Anthology Studios and the Indian production banner Panorama Studios.
