Kalki 2898 AD is making rounds these days. Specially after the film grossed 101-102 crore on its first day in India. But what makes the film worth a try? Let’s figure it out.
When you think of dystopian sagas, the first few movies to occur in your mind have to be the Dune, Mad Max or The Hunger Games series. Most of these have a few common narratives. Which are the tales of good vs. evil, the saviour of the universe, and tonnes of mythological references. Director Nag Ashwin has combined all these to tell us the story of Kalki 2898 AD. The movie has heavy references of the Mahabharata mixed with a dystopian science fiction storyline set in the future of the world.
The Plot
Kalki 2898 AD The film starts with Ashwatthama (played by Amitabh Bachchan), who is cursed by Lord Krishna to be immortal until Vishnu’s new avatar is born, whom he must protect. The story then moves to Kaashi, the last standing city in a devastated world. The Ganges has dried up, and resources are scarce. A giant pyramid holds everything needed to survive, but it’s controlled by the Supreme and off-limits to the poor. The rich live in a separate area called the ‘Complex,’ while the poor struggle to survive.
A major experiment called ‘Project K’ is led by the Supreme played by Kamal Haasan. He fears a prophecy about a child (carried by Deepika Padukone’s character, Sumathi) who will end his rule. When Sumathi escapes, the Supreme places a bounty on her. Meanwhile, Prabhas plays Bhairava, a top hunter dreaming of moving to the Complex. He sees Sumathi’s bounty as his ticket to a better life.As Ashwatthama reappears to protect Sumathi, the story unfolds.
Performances
Amitabh Bachchan is the heart of Kalki 2898 AD. Hence it is also one big reasons for you to catch this film. By potraying the role of Ashwatthama, Big B showed the new generation why there won’t be anyone like him on the screen. His strong sentimental feelings is mindblowing and brings back memories of his old films. Prabhas does a good job as Bhairava, bringing a fun, carefree attitude to his role.On the other hand, Deepika portrays Sumathi with grace and dedication, and we look forward to seeing more of her in the sequels. Kalki 2898 AD’s villain, aka the Supreme, is played by the legendary Kamal Haasan. He plays the villainous Supreme with intensity, despite his limited screen time. Disha Patani has a brief role as Moxie, but she is expected to have more screen time in the sequel. .Apart from our leads, Kalki 2898 AD has a bunch of celebrities doing cameos every ten minutes of the movie

Kalki 2898 AD with an approximate budget of 600 crores, and this can be noticedin its heavy VFX and settings, which are quite top-notch and can be considered as a new benchmark.While watching Kalki 2898 AD the first half it is slow and filled with unnecessary dialogues and scenes. it’s quite boring and irritating to catch up .But don’t give up—the second half picks up pace, becoming more entertaining and engaging. Once you cross the almost two-hour intermission, the movie progresses and starts to make sense. The storyline eventually becomes entertaining and gripping with machines blowing up. Where it becomes clearer and more exciting, leaving you curious about ‘What will happen next?’
Kalki 2898 AD first day earnings
The film had a sensational opening, grossing Rs. 101-102 crore on its first day in India. It’s only the fourth film to hit the century mark on its opening day. Most of the earnings came from the Telugu states, where it grossed nearly Rs. 58 crore, the second-highest opening day of all time there. It earned Rs. 26 crore in North India and Rs. 5 crore in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
