In the most recent episode of Koffee With Karan (KWK) season 8, Rani Mukerji was questioned regarding her previous remarks regarding “mature love stories.” When she remarked sarcastically in a recent interview that “only women mature, the men get younger,” filmmaker and talk show host Karan Johar questioned her about her meaning.
Rani jumped in to correct Karan Johar when he remarked that the film industry might be “ageist.” “No, I don’t think it is only the industry. Let’s not be harsh on the industry. I think, the industry does what they (the makers) expect will be accepted by the audience or not.” Karan responded, “How do we know? The audience might just very well accept a love story… it would be lovely to see a Kajol-Shah Rukh romance. I mean why won’t we see it?”
To this Rani responded, “Because a filmmaker like you is not making it.” After a moment of awkward silence, Kajol said, “And cut to next question please.” Karan then said, “I have been put in my place, thank you very much (looking at Rani)… I think before anything else… let’s just get the hell out of here.”
Rani has worked with Karan in a number of romance movies, including Shah Rukh Khan’s lead in Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006). Karan has worked with Kajol on a number of movies, including My Name Is Khan (2010), in which she costarred with Shah Rukh Khan.
Romantic dramas were Karan Johar’s last two films as a filmmaker. These included the lead roles in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016), which starred Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma, and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023), which starred Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh. It has been a long time since Karan collaborated with Rani or Kajol.
