There are comedy movies that were made with huge budgets, but still, they failed to impress the audience. However, some hilarious movies were produced on a low budget but had recorded high earnings in cinemas. While Bollywood is notorious for big-budget movies and superstar casts, some comedies have emerged from this low-budget ghetto and produced both laughter and profit. With time these films have shown that good scripts, strong cast, and believable comedy do not always require elaborate settings and famous actors.
Bheja Fry
A truly funny movie, Bheja Fry was made with the most minimal of budgets. It costs Rs. 60 lakhs to produce. Despite being relatively cheap to produce, this movie was successful and made Rs. 8 crores at the box office. Some of the good elements of this film were the jokes used throughout the film and an amazing performance by Vinay Pathak as the irritating yet charming Bharat Bhushan.
Vicky Donor
It was made for approximately Rs. 5 crores but went on to garner more than Rs. 66 crores. The subject discussed in the film was socially unspoken and therefore the movie was funny but at the same time quite philosophical. Ayushmann Khurrana as the love interest, Vicky, was thoroughly liked by the audience, with his easy charm being a plus point.
Fukrey
Produced with Rs. 8 crores only, Fukrey was able to gross over Rs. 36 crores. Due to the hilarious characters and comical situations depicted in this piece, it earned the admiration of young people because of its theme of making quick money among friends. The success of the film also resulted in the creation of a sequel, thus expanding the popularity of the movie even more.
Hindi Medium
Hindi Medium was produced in 23 Crores and went on to cross over 102 Crores in its worldwide collections. Critics said the humor of this film coupled with an inspiring message about the Indian education system was interesting to viewers. Irrfan Khan’s exceptional acting was a major plus for this film and therefore can be categorized as a successful film.
These low-budget comedies have proved that with the right mix of humor, relatability, and strong performances, can turn out to be remarkable success if even films are made with limited resources. They prove that in Bollywood, sometimes, laughter truly is the best medicine for box-office glory.
