Enjoy this Independence Day in style! From bell bottoms to border sarees and back to sarees. But women are powerful and courageous this time. India’s fashion has changed significantly throughout the years, in large part because to Bollywood, whose characters helped to establish fashion and style.
The simplicity of 50’s fashion 
Both India and the movie industry were growing. The majority of this era was dominated by a saree with a modest fitting blouse, a long skirt with a blouse and a dupatta, and modest, plain clothing. Films tended to depict rural India.
1960s – Sadhna cut reigned gracefully
The most beautiful time period in Bollywood. We have Mumtaz sari, Anarkali, and Sadhna cut, among other things. Madhubala rose to become the pinnacle of beauty, and everyone fell in love with Meena Kumari’s silk sarees.
1970s- Bohemian it is!
Action movie period was characterised by romanticism and hippy culture. Boys now dress in a consistent style thanks to Amitabh Bachchan, Rishi Kapoor, and their furious man and lover boy styles. Bollywood’s prominent females, meanwhile, experimented a lot with their wardrobe choices. Zeenat Aman unveiled a vintage hippy appearance. While others in bikinis sizzled on the screen.
80’s – All shine and glamor
Next are the 1980s, Girls tend to like chiffon and crepe and other sheer, sparkling fabrics with plenty of sequins. The decade’s glitzy screen superstars were Rekha and Sridevi. Colours, glitter, and bling were quite popular throughout the disco dancer period.
The 1990s- A fresh outlook
Similar to the economy, Bollywood underwent transformation.Family dramas, romantic comedies, and collegiate romance flicks abounded in this decade. We also received suits and saris. Additionally, with the success of films like Karan Johar’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hain, western-inspired clothes and short skirts, maxis, denim jackets and jumpers entered the mainstream.
The contemporary 21st century
Ethnic and Western fashions were mixed together in this decade. Kareena, Priyanka, and Aishwarya all donned outfits with perilously short hemlines. Extra crop tops, miniskirts, dresses, cholis with no backs, and bikinis become the heroines’ go-to outfits. Every girl still adores Aishwarya’s appearance, Priyanka’s desi girl saree, and Kareena’s Poo dress.
The 2010s
This decade brought us stories that emphasised women. Everyone fell in love with Kangana Ranaut’s “Queen,” which helped actresses like Alia Bhatt, Deepika Padukone, Richa Chadha, and Taapsee Pannu break through and popularise “girl next door” style. Everyone loved Padukone’s kurta and denim ensemble with kohl eyes, and Alia’ Shanya popularised the chick style among college females. We also saw a lot of female-centric stories that praised women’s emancipation during this decade.
The Pandemic Times- Shift to a lighter palette
A decade of pandemics. In addition to film, OTT and social media are becoming our main sources of fashion inspiration. However, throughout the first three years of this decade, realistic filmmaking predominated before giving way to theatrical Bollywood. Taapsee Pannu and Kangana Ranaut’s appearances in Tappadd and Panga, respectively, won everyone over in the first two years. However, with Rocky aur Rani this year, Karan Johar returned to the director’s chair after a seven-year absence.The chiffon saree was revived in the movie.
