Mahua Moitra, a Trinamool Congress MP, will present her case before the Supreme Court on Friday in an attempt to prevent her removal from the Lok Sabha due to alleged wrongdoing. The case will be heard by a court chaired by Justice Sanjiv Khanna.
In a case involving cash for a query, Moitra was banished on Friday. Moitra had complained of “arbitrariness” and “substantial illegality” from the House ethics committee, which had suggested that she be removed.
Following a walkout by opposition MPs, the Lok Sabha had ousted Moitra by voice vote for disclosing her login credentials and accepting gifts and potentially cash from businessman Darshan Hiranandani. The ethics committee’s report had recommended Moitra’s removal.
Mahua Moitra had contested the disqualification in her plea, pointing out that she was not permitted to defend herself in the Lok Sabha during a debate on the findings.
The scandal surrounding the TMC MP from Krishnanagar began in September when BJP MP Nishikant Dubey wrote to Speaker Om Birla of the Lok Sabha based on a complaint filed by lawyer Jai Anant Dehradai, who claimed that the MP had accepted bribes and favors in exchange for asking questions in Parliament.
