Maldives is struggling with a severe political crisis, as Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem becomes the latest victim of violence. The news spread like fire when Shameem was brutally stabbed near Noor mosque In daylight by gangs, raising concerns about the safety of public figures in the country. According to local reports, the attack on Prosecutor General Shameem occurred when there was no security nearby. The incident took place amid the ongoing political turmoil in the country. Shameem is currently undergoing treatment at ADK Hospital for his injuries. He fractured his wrist while trying to put off the attackers.
Following the attack, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which appointed Shameem in 2019, issued a strong statement. The party criticized the Muizzu administration for failing to protect citizens and those performing their constitutional duties. President Dr. Muizzu was accused of allowing criminals to act with impunity, contributing to the rise in violence in the Maldives.
Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, also condemned the assault. He urged the government to bring the perpetrators to justice, And wrote “I condemn the violent assault on Prosector General Hussain Shameem this morning. I wish PG Shameem a speedy recovery. Politically motivated acts of violence have no place in a democratic society and I call on the government to be swift in bringing the perpetrators to justice,”

Who is Hussain Shameem?
Hussain Shameem replaced Aishath Bisham and was appointed as the prosecutor general in 2019, under Article 221 of the Maldivian Constitution and Article 3 of the Prosecutor General’s Act. He has faced challenges, including allegations of allowing government influence in the PG Office’s work. Shameem served as the deputy prosecutor general twice and was a member of the clemency board. Shameem holds a Master of Laws in Criminal Law and Criminal Justice from the University of Sussex, along with a graduate degree in Shari’a and Law from Al-Azhar University in Egypt.
