Massive fire breaks out in refugee camp for Rohingya Muslims in Bangladesh

A massive fire have spread through the refugee camp for Rohingya Muslims in southern Bangladesh on Sunday, as a result it left thousands homeless, as per a fire official and the United Nations.

However, no casualties have been reported so far at Balukhali camp in Cox’s Bazar district, added Emdadul Haque, a fire service official.

The UNHCR in Bangladesh tweeted that the Rohingya refugee volunteers were quick enough to stop the fire in collaboration with the agency and its partners who offered immediate aid.

As per the reports, more than 1 million Rohingya refugees have evaded to Bangladesh from Myanmar for around several decades. The numbers include 740,000 who crossed the borders in August 2017, post the insurgency caused by the Myanmar military.

Conditions in Myanmar have led to a standstill post the military took over in 2021 and from thereon the military’s attempts to push back the refugees have failed.

Last year, the United States mentioned that the oppression of Rohingya in Myanmar is leading to mass genocide after U.S. authorities verified that the mass atrocities against locals and civilians by the military laid out in a streamlined campaign has kicked off against the ethic minority group. Muslim Rohingya are under the radar of facing massive discrimination in Buddhist-majority Myanmar, in which they have refuted their citizenship and many other distinct rights.
