The 2020 Toyota Supra has been unveiled at the 2019 Detroit Auto Show. The last generation Supra was available from 1993 to 2002. After a long hiatus, the 5th generation of Toyota Supra has been finally launched. Deliveries will start rolling out in the next few months. The all-new Supra shares its underpinnings with the BMW Z4. The sale of the newest Supra will begin stateside first and will eventually follow other global markets. Unfortunately, India is not a name included in the list of markets. And the likelihood of having a Supra on our shores is quite grim for now.
The 5th-gen Toyota Supra is the first model to be developed by Toyota GAZOO Racing in Japan. The design plan for the car, nonetheless, received inputs from Toyota Motor North America and Toyota Europe.
On the Outside
The all-new Toyota Supra ditches the looks of the iconic Supra MK4 for a newer design inspired by Calty’s FT-1 Concept. This time around, the Supra comes with a long body design with a low hood and tastefully done retroelements. In addition to sweeping headlamps, the ride flaunts gaping air-intakes neighboring the central grille section on both sides. At the back, 2020 Toyota Supra flaunts a trapezoidal bumper. The funky LED tail lamps accompanying the integrated spoiler is a homage to the 4th generation Supra Mk4.
At the Heart of Matter
Toyota Supra will be offered in two variants, 3.0 and 3.0 Premium. In addition to these, there will be a separate launch edition. It will be based on the 3.0 Premium variant. All variants share a turbocharged 3.0L six-cylinder. The 3.0L engine is capable of producing 335 horsepower and 495 Nm of torque. It is paired with 8-speed automatic transmission which powers the aft wheels.
A Toyota with an unlikely German minimalism
2020 Toyota Supra flaunts a modern, driver-focused cabin. The Supra shares a lot of its part with the BMW Z4. The instrument cluster comes with a single meter design and a color head-up display. The new Toyota Supra supports a double bubble roof design which serves two purposes. One, it adds to the slick aerodynamics of the ride and second, it increases the headroom inside the cabin. Making it feel a little more spacious for the taller passengers.
The 5th-generation of the Toyota Supra comes with a 6.5-inch infotainment screen paired with a JBL premium audio system. In addition to touch, it can be operated using the rotary knob placed near the gear-shifter.
Additionally, the ride gets leather upholstery and race-inspired seats with memory functions. Multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, traction control, and a number of other safety features are available as standard. A galore of safety features are also available to add.
Performance that could have been better
The all-new Toyota Supra has a maximum attainable speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited) and is able to accelerate to 100 km/h from 0 in just 4.1 seconds. Hence, it is the fastest vehicle with a Toyota badge. The ride features two driving modes, namely Normal and Sport.
While the Normal mode doesn’t make any adjustments in the Supra’s default configuration, the Sport mode minimizes the electronic intervention made by ABS and traction control.
Another advantage is its excellent 49-51 weight distribution, making it a well-balanced ride. The engineers have earned their keep by bringing the Supra’s center of gravity even lower than its smaller sibling, and the only other performance coupe by the brand, the Toyota 86. You can increase the fun factor by switching to the Sport mode, it improves the throttle response, weighs up the steering response, and opens up the exhaust valves to produce a louder noise.
