“Lots of dead, can’t even count”, these are the words of the survivors of deadly cyclone Idai that left the African continent devastated. 39 years old Otelea Jose recalls the horrific cyclone and says, “It was very scary, we were running in all directions, the water was full of snakes.”
In three of the southern African countries, cyclone Idai’s death toll has risen above 750. It’s been 10 days the storm hit the area. The new challenges that are alarming for a worst situation to be happen are cholera and malaria.
Nearly 110,000 people are now in camps. Mozambican government’s emergency coordinator, Correia told the media that, “We will have cholera, we will have malaria. It’s unavoidable in this situation, so the government is opening a cholera treatment centre already.”
Deadly cyclone Idai struck the coastline of Mozambique on 14 March, has caused devastation and heavy loss of life. The UN says 1.7 million people in Mozambique lived in the path of the cyclone, with a further 920,000 people affected in Malawi and many thousands more in Zimbabwe.
