2022 have been a bright year for the Tamil cinema, and it has got much extravaganza stored in for this year as well. With the rise of OTT, viewers’ choice have shifted prominently. Last year, the industry witnessed blockbuster hit with films like Vikram, Ponniyin Selvan 1 and Thiruchitrambalam. Here’s a list of most anticipated Tamil films of the year.
Varisu, January 12
Tamil cinema starring Vijay and Rashmika Mandanna is the most awaited film which is slated to release on the first month of 2023. The film is a family entertainer upkeeping the spirits of the Pongal holiday season.
Thunivu, January 12
This film is set to clash with Vijay’s Varisu after a gap of eight years, the mega stars will be facing off at the box office. The clash could be either a win-win situation or make loss for the films. Helmed by H Vinoth the film looks enticing which features Ajith as an anti-hero, kind of similar to a blockbuster role he did earlier in the film, Mankatha.
Ponniyin Selvan 2, April 28
The blockbuster hit of 2022, a magnum opus by Mani Ratnam is all set for the sequel. The legendary filmmaker will release the collection of the first part with PS 2. Featuring Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai, and Karthi, in the pivotal roles.
Indian 2
After minting more than Rs 400 crore with Vikram, Kamal Haasan is set to make a comeback with Indian 2 which is an action-drama, a sequel to the 1996 film. The first part portrays a vigilante Senapathy and involves his son, while the second part narrates the story of the former and his father.
Ayalaan
This film has been in the filming process for the long time. It stars Sivakarthikeyan in the pivotal role. It is laid on a sci-fi genre which is expected to follow the trail of Aamir Khan’s PK. Helmed by R Ravikumar, this film is on the verge of release, ramping up expectation from the viewers.
Jailer
The Superstar is back in action this year with the Nelson Dilipkumar directorial. It is speculated that the plot is based on the police warden who stops the prisoners from running away. The film features Ramya Krishnan, Kannada star Shivaraj Kumar, Vasanth Ravi, and Vinayakan in lead roles.
Thalapathy 62
There has been a lot of speculations and questions revolving around the film’s release. It has been officially stated by the makers that Gautham Vasudev Menon will be starred in the film. This project is set to make a witness the collab of ace director and duo.
Suriya 42
Suriya is set to feature in a Siva film of the Veeram fame. The teaser of Surya 42, has left the audience hooked and is set to make the feature in a massive budget film, joining the pan-India bandwagon.
Viduthalai
Vetri Maaran’s Viduthalai is out in the cue of the big budgeted films to be released this year. Comedy star Soori is starred as the lead in the grab of a police constable inspired from a short story by Thunaivan, written by Jeyamohan. The film also features Gautam Vasudev Menon and Vijay Sethupathi.
Captain Miller
Dhanush is set to be arriving in a new avatar with a decent family drama directed by Arun Matheshwaran of Rocky fame. The film is based on historical action drama, a new venture for the actor.
