The first pan-Indian movie directed by Nani, Dasara, will be released nationwide in a variety of languages. Baahubali: The Beginning helped revive the tradition of pan-Indian films, but remakes are no longer as well-liked as they once were. Both the Hindi remakes of Nani’s Jersey and Allu Arjun’s Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo, Jersey and Shehzada, were unsuccessful at drawing audiences. When asked to comment on the subject, Nani stated that because audiences are aware that this particular story has already been “out there,” their interest in a remake is typically lower.
The actor told Galatta Plus, “I think it has more to do with a lot of people who have watched the original and also generally, the interest. It has been out there already and it’s not something we are exploring on day 1. People are excited to be the first one to know if it’s a good film and the remake takes it away. Now, in today’s time when the film is already available on OTT, available on YouTube, when you know you are not going to break the news to the world, then I think the general excitement is a little lower.”
He further mentioned, Nani’s Jersey was remade in Hindi with Shahid Kapoor and the actor shared his thoughts on the remake. “The soul is intact and I think they performed so well. It’s an equally brilliantly made film in Hindi also, not that there’s something missing,” he said. The Hindi version of the film did not perform well at the box office.
According to the star, it used to be simpler to recreate foreign-language movies because there wasn’t as much information available about how the original had done and because the audience would come in to see a brand-new production because the content wasn’t readily available online.
“The days when remakes used to work, there wasn’t much communication about how the original one did. The scenes were not available on YouTube, there was no YouTube so the excitement was still alive. But now, I think that is going away,” he added.
“Earlier, you never released in other languages. You sold remake rights because you thought you are from this particular language and you will not be watched there and they can put their own stars there and they can remake it. Now, after these many examples of people watching films like Baahubali, Kantara, KGF, Pushpa, they have proved that it doesn’t matter,” he said.
Dasara will hit the theatres on March 31.
