Nepal now allows premiere of Hindi movies except Adipurush in theaters

After being prohibited due to a controversy surrounding Adipurush dialogues in which Goddess Sita is referred to as “India’s daughter,” Hindi film screenings resumed across the nation on Friday. Except for “Adipurush,” which is still prohibited, numerous movie theatres in Kathmandu have started showing Hindi films.

Sara Ali Khan and Vicky Kaushal’s Hindi film Zara Hatke, Zara Bachke was screened in the city’s multiplex QFX Cinema, which is located in Sundhara.

The Nepal Motion Picture Association announced that all foreign and Nepali films, excluding Adipurush, will start showing on Friday. Balendra Shah, the mayor of Kathmandu, ordered a ban on all Hindi films after a dialogue from the movie Adipurush in which Sita is referred to as “India’s daughter” caused controversy.

Many people think that Sita, also known as Janaki, was born in Janakpur in southeast Nepal.

Judge Dhir Bahadur Chand of the Patan High Court’s single bench issued a temporary ruling on Thursday indicating that films with censor board approval should continue to be screened.

“It has been our belief that no one is above the nation and nationality. It is our fundamental right to engage in our business freely abiding by Nepalese Law,” the bench stated post observation.

The film Adipurush was not allowed to be screened because it involved “Nepal’s sovereignty and independence,” according to Shah, who stated the same day that he was prepared to accept any punishment.
