The same-sex couples who raise children are able to be reported to authorities anonymously thanks to a law passed by the Hungarian parliament.
People are permitted to report anyone who oppose the law under the legislation that was enacted earlier this week “constitutionally recognized role of marriage and the family” and those who wish to contest for child’s rights “to an identity appropriate to their sex at birth.”
The institution of marriage is protected under the constitution of Hungary “between one man and one woman,” and also mentions “he mother is a woman, the father a man.”
The rights of the nation’s LGBTQ community have been restricted, and adoption for same-sex couples has essentially been prohibited under the administrations of Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Hungary was denied financing from the European Union in part because of this.
The European Commission filed a complaint against Hungary over a 2021 law that discriminates against LGBTQ minorities before the European Court of Justice in 2022. The majority of member states have taken the commission’s side in the litigation.
