To help conserve even more fuel, Google Maps has included a new environmentally friendly routing tool. The new feature will shortly (and at an undisclosed timeframe) be available in India in addition to the selected countries. The new function will assist users in choosing a more environmentally friendly route, reducing fuel and energy use as well as CO2 emissions, all of which benefit the environment.

Based on the engine type of the car, the newly added capability estimates fuel or energy efficiency on certain routes. When you activate the function, Google Maps displays both the quickest and most energy-efficient route to the location, regardless of whether they are different.
Ways to disable this feature
If the user chooses to turn off the new feature, Google Maps will only suggest the quickest route—ignoring the more fuel- or energy-efficient option.
A media note reported, “The Google Maps app shows fuel or energy-efficiency estimates on some routes based on your vehicle’s engine type. The more fuel or energy-efficient the route, the lower your car’s fuel/energy usage and CO2 emissions.”
Fuel-efficient routing through AI
According to Google, artificial intelligence (AI) is used in fuel-efficient routing to recommend routes with fewer obstacles. Fuel-efficient routes for two-wheelers will also be included in India’s new Google Maps feature, enabling more people to commute more sustainably.
Ways to enable fuel-efficient routes feature
Activating the newest function is simple. If the user grants you access to the new functionality, you must do the following actions:
- Launch the Google Maps application.
- Press on the username or initials.
- Access the settings.
- Press and hold the Navigation settings icon.
- Scroll to “Route options” now.
- Press the “Prefer fuel-efficient routes” button to activate the environmentally friendly routing.
- Choose your engine type there.
- Next, hit “Engine Type,” then choose the appropriate option.
There are two options available to you if you are operating a car with an internal combustion engine: diesel or gas (petrol). If your vehicle is a hybrid, go with electric.
