ODI World Cup 2023: West Indies misses the spot; Scotland emerge victorious in the Super 6 stage

Following a 7-wicket defeat by Scotland in the Super Six stage of the qualifiers on Saturday, West Indies are no longer in the running for the 2023 ODI World Cup.

West Indies, the 1975 and 1979 tournament champions, will not be one of the top 10 teams in limited overs cricket for the first time in the 48-year history of the competition.

When West Indies batted first, they were skittled out for just 181 in 43.5 overs, with Jason Holder hitting the most runs with 45, followed by Romario Shepherd with 36.

Matthew Cross (74) and Brandon McMullen (69), who helped Scotland easily chase down the goal in 43.3 overs, sealed the destiny of the West Indies.

The West Indies began the Super Six round with zero points and a net run rate that was worse than the other teams after losing a pivotal match in the Super Over eliminator against the Netherlands in a Group A match, which came after a loss to Zimbabwe.

West Indies gained four points after defeating the USA (by 35 runs) and Nepal (by 101 runs), but things quickly fell apart due to subpar play in all areas.

However, the West Indies didn’t carry any points because they lost to both Zimbabwe and the Netherlands, who both advanced from Group A.

Ironically, West Indies had to compete in the qualifier for the 2019 World Cup as well, but they were able to place in the top two with Afghanistan to avoid shame.
