On Tuesday, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar said opposition parties should discuss the “one nation, one election theory” even if they disagree with it.

“An issue came up regarding one nation, one election. They [the opposition] are saying we will not discuss it at all. It is your job to discuss it; it is your discretion to agree or disagree with it,” Dhankhar mentioned while addressing the students in Rajasthan’s Kota study hub.

The Rajya Sabha chairman continued by saying that while political parties do have the freedom to practise their politics, it is impossible for them to avoid discussion, debate, and interaction.

“If there is no discussion in a democracy, then where is that democracy? It is necessary for democratic values that there are discussions and debates,” Dhankhar further added.

The one nation, one election law for concurrent national and state assembly elections was rumoured to be introduced after the Centre decided to hold a five-day extraordinary session of parliament from September 18 to 22. The extraordinary session’s schedule has not yet been made public.

Dhankhar, who was in Kota for the day, also went to a ceremony honouring pensioners. Om Birla, speaker of the Lok Sabha, and Pralhad Joshi, minister of parliamentary affairs for the Union, were also there.
