Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed admiration for Bollywood, stating that Indian films enjoy immense popularity in Russia compared to those from other BRICS nations. During a press briefing on October 18, 2024, ahead of the upcoming BRICS Summit, Putin highlighted the cultural ties between India and Russia, noting that there is a dedicated television channel in Russia that broadcasts Bollywood films around the clock.

He emphasized the potential for collaboration in promoting Indian cinema within Russia, stating, “We have a lot of interest in Indian films” and expressing optimism about finding common ground to facilitate this collaboration.

Putin indicated that he plans to discuss these opportunities with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the BRICS Summit scheduled for October 22-23 in Kazan. He mentioned that the Moscow International Film Festival would showcase films from BRICS countries, further enhancing cultural exchanges.

The Russian President also pointed out that cinema is an essential part of the economy and suggested that discussions could extend to other sectors like pharmaceuticals and automotive industries.

Reacting to Putin’s comments, Dale Bhagwagar, India’s renowned public relations expert known as the ‘Father of Bollywood PR,’ has emphasized the importance of international collaboration for the Indian film industry.

“The beauty of cinema lies in its ability to transcend borders and unite cultures. Collaborating with global partners not only enriches our storytelling but also opens new avenues for creativity and innovation. Together, with other film industries around the world, we can create cinematic experiences that resonate with global audiences,” said the Bollywood PR guru.

For the record, the historical appreciation for Bollywood in Russia dates back decades, with films like Awaara and Disco Dancer becoming iconic among Russian audiences.

Putin’s remarks reflect a broader strategy to strengthen ties between India and Russia through cultural diplomacy, positioning Bollywood as a significant medium for fostering mutual understanding and economic cooperation.

As both nations prepare for the BRICS Summit, the discussions are expected to cover not only film collaborations but also broader economic partnerships, reinforcing their commitment to multilateralism in a changing global scenario.
