A bill allowing authorities to seize the money, assets, and property of anyone found guilty of criticizing the Russian army was approved by MPs in Russia. Since it became illegal to denigrate the Russian military soon after it began its assault on in February 2022, Moscow has imprisoned a number of opponents of the country’s war on Ukraine. The most recent action will intensify the crackdown on dissent. This may also affect Russian exiles living abroad.

A potential prison term of up to 15 years is imposed under the bill, which was approved by the State Duma, the lower house, for disseminating “false information” about the army.

“They live comfortably, renting out property, continuing to receive royalties at the expense of Russian citizens. They use these funds to support the Nazi regime,” Vyacheslav Volodin averred, further adding, “The decision adopted should stop those who commit crimes against the security of our country, who consider it possible to insult our citizens, soldiers and officers, and who support the Nazis.”

    About the recent laws

As of right now, disseminating information on the war in Ukraine that does not originate from an official government source may be considered “false” and subject to legal action. Russian leaders have been calling for stricter laws and labelling as “traitors” everyone who opposes the military attack by the Kremlin.

“We are showing good will that we are doing this only two years in,” Andrei Lugovoy, deputy, Russian right-wing LDPR party, stated.
