According to persons acquainted with the international politics, the foreign ministers of the Quad nations—Australia, Japan, the US, and India—are set to meet in New York next month at the UN General Assembly.
In light of China’s growing aggressiveness in the area, the summit is anticipated to assess the four nations’ cooperation to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific, according to the sources. On September 19, the annual session of the UN General Assembly will begin.
This will be the first time that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi, and US External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will interact following their March 3 meeting in New Delhi to discuss important issues in the Indo-Pacific region.
Any potential meeting is also likely to include discussion of the Ukraine issue, according to the sources.
One of the new initiatives introduced at the summit in March was the Quad Working Group on Counter-Terrorism, which aims to combat new and emerging forms of terrorism.
The prolonged stalemate between China and India on the Line of Actual Control and the firing of a water cannon by a Chinese coast Guard ship on a Philippine vessel transporting supplies to troops on a shoal in the South China Sea have brought China’s aggressive behaviour back into the spotlight in recent weeks.
The next Quad Leaders’ Summit will take place in India in 2024.
