The in-form batsman of India and opener Shikhar Dhawan ruled out of World Cup 2019 for 3 weeks after scans revealed he had a fractured thumb. Dhawan’s injury is a massive blow to India that won both their matches so far in the tournament.
Shikhar Dhawan got injured during India vs Australia match at The Oval during Nathan Coulter-Nile’s bowling spell. Despite the injury, Dhawan scored a century and played a crucial role in making India win. Dhawan may take up to a month to recover from injury. Currently, he is under treatment under the supervision of his physiotherapist Patrick Farhat. The World Cup started on May 30 and the final match will be played on July 14.
It is not yet clear whether the Indian team will name a replacement for Dhawan but chances are either Shreyas Iyer or Rishabh Pant could be called up to replace Shikhar Dhawan who has 6 hundred in ICC tournaments.
Harbhajan Singh told India Today, “If it is going to be 3 weeks, it means the majority of the tournament is gone. And without Shikhar Dhawan who was the Man of the Match against Australia, it means Indian team will find it a little bit difficult. You have another opener in KL Rahul but Rahul hasn’t opened in the recent past. It’s going to be a challenge. This is a big blow.”
Harbhajan Singh also suggested Ajinkya Rahane as a replacement for Shikhar Dhawan.
