It is an adaptation of a true murder story in the city of Udaipur when a tailor by the name Kanhaiya Lal was brutally killed. This movie was banned by the Delhi High Court a day before its release. Although the release of these movies created some issues, it’s not the first time that movies in India have been banned or delayed. Other films had a potential and bold storyline that was banned in India. But still, many of these powerful films are now available to watch on OTT platforms.

Angry Indian Goddesses (2015) – on Netflix

This film is about several women who meet in Goa to attend the wedding of their friend. The fun holiday quickly evolves into a serious discussion on the issues that women encounter in everyday life, such as discrimination, societal pressure, and the struggle to be free. It is a powerful movie that speaks about how women feel, what angers them, and what they want out of this life. The movie was not like the ordinary Bollywood flicks and suffered due to its bold content.

This is also one of the Banned Indian Movies, which is a true story of the 2002 Gujarat riots. It traces the lives of a Parsi family whose son is missing out on the riots. The film reveals the extent to which innocent people had to suffer and how they fell by the system. It is a torturous yet significant film that could not be shown in Gujarat due to political reasons.

The film Water, by Deepa Mehta, happens in 1938, when the British ruled India. It is a story about widows who were sent to go and live in an ashram when their husbands died. Even after such women had given birth, they could not remarry, live on their own, or even manage to lead a normal life. The film depicts how they were treated and left by society. It is a tragic yet lovely movie that speaks of gender disparity and religious rigidity.

Black Friday (2004) – on Google Play

The movie is based on a true event, namely the bomb blasts in Bombay in 1993, which shook the entire country. Helmed by Anurag Kashyap, it is the complete version of what transpired before and after the blasts. It also demonstrates the investigation by the police into the case. The movie is based on the book authored by journalist Hussain Zaidi and tells the truth in a very detailed manner. However, due to its serious content, it took many years before it was launched in Indian cinema.

Another Banned Indian Movie was Deepa Mehta’s film is Fire. It’s about the two women, Radha and Sita, who are not happy in their marriages. They experience love, solace, and bonding with one another. The film discusses love between two women, and at that time it was quite daring. It was released, but there were protests from many people. It is now regarded as a potent film that is based on emotions, freedom, and being yourself.
