In the week ending April 30, the number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits increased by 19,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 1,81,000, according to a report released Thursday by the department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
The report also revealed that the number of people receiving regular state unemployment benefits declined from 19,000 to 1.384 million during the week ending April 23, Xinhua news agency reported. The number peaked in April and May in 2020, when it exceeded 20 million. The total number of people claiming benefits for all programs, state and federal combined, fell from 35,165 to 1.478 million for the week ending April 16.
The data also showed that companies were struggling to hire youth as the labor market was unable to meet supply demand. The BLS reported Tuesday that job numbers had decreased slightly by the end of March, the highest level in the series’ history that began in December 2000. According to the March report, the number of unemployed persons has come down from 3,18,000 to the level of 6 million. Payroll data company Automatic Data Processing (ADP) reported Wednesday that private companies in the US added 2,47,000 jobs in April, with smaller companies laying off 120,000 employees.
