The party has nothing to say: TMC refuses to back Mohua Moitra

The Trinamool Congress has made the decision to stay out of the situation involving Mahua Moitra, its MP, who has been accused of accepting money in exchange for asking questions in parliament.

In a signed affidavit, Darshan Hiranandani, the CEO of the real estate to energy company Hiranandani, who is suspected of paying Ms. Moitra to ask probing questions about the Adani Group in Parliament, stated that she specifically targeted Gautam Adani in an effort to “malign and embarrass” Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose “impeccable reputation” prevented the opposition from criticising him.

β€œThe party has nothing to say on this issue. We think the person around whom this controversy is revolving is best suited to react to this,” Trinamool’s West Bengal general secretary and spokesperson Kunal Ghosh mentioned.

Unwilling to provide their identity, a second senior TMC representative stated that the party leadership “will be maintaining distance from it” since they don’t want to get involved in a dispute. In response to the news, BJP leader Rahul Sinha stated that the ruling party in West Bengal cannot avoid accountability.

β€œ”The TMC always tries to shrug off its responsibility whenever its leaders are either arrested or land into trouble. The TMC needs to explain whether it supports Mahua Moitra or not,” he added.

Om Birla, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, has forwarded Mr. Dubey’s complaint to the Ethics Committee of Parliament.

The head of the Lok Sabha Ethics Committee, Vinod Sonkar, had previously said that he had obtained Hiranandani’s sworn affidavit.

But Ms. Moitra has cast doubt on the veracity of Hiranandani’s declaration, claiming that it was “drafted by the PMO” and that he was coerced into signing it after his family’s companies were “threaten[ed]” to be “totally shut down.”
