Even as recent as ten years ago, sportsbooks sponsoring professional sports teams seemed about as unlikely as the possibility of a regulated online casino market.
Now, both things are realities, thanks in large part to a 2018 Supreme Court ruling that struck down a 1992 federal law banning sports betting and giving states the option to regulate their own sports betting markets.
As of 2022, almost two-thirds of all states have approved legal sports wagering, while several others (Maine, Maryland, and Nebraska) are expected to legalize the activity within the next year. The Supreme Court decision led to the creation of several new sportsbooks as companies tried to set themselves apart from others early in the legal sports betting landscape.
In an effort to do so, many sportsbooks have initiated sponsorships with professional sports teams. The NBA, NFL, MLB, WNBA, and other leagues have teams with sportsbook partnerships. Heck, even Major League Fishing has a partnership with Bally Bet.
Below are four other sportsbooks that sponsor multiple teams.
BetMGM
BetMGM is one of the most notable legal sportsbooks in the United States. Its commercials are all over TV, and online ads are hard to escape. The sportsbook has done a great job at marketing itself via advertising and sponsorships with professional sports teams spanning several leagues.
BetMGM has or has had partnerships with several NFL and MLB teams. This list includes the Tennessee Titans, Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Jets, Detroit Lions, Las Vegas Raiders, Baltimore Ravens, Denver Broncos, Arizona Cardinals, Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, Washington Nationals, and Houston Astros.
BetMGM is also active outside of those two leagues. It sponsors the Philadelphia 76ers and the Richard Childress Racing team (NASCAR).
Caesars Sportsbook
Caesars Sportsbook is right up there, with BetMGM as one of the most marketed sportsbooks in the US. It has partnerships with more than a dozen teams, including MLB teams like the Chicago White Sox, New York Mets, and Arizona Diamondbacks. It is even building a sportsbook at Arizona’s stadium as the National League team is Caesar’s official state license partner.
Caesars also sponsors NHL teams (New Jersey Devils, Vegas Golden Knights, New York Rangers, and Washington Capitals), NFL teams (Philadelphia Eagles, New Orleans Saints, Las Vegas Raiders, Indianapolis Colts, Buffalo Bills, and Baltimore Ravens), and NBA teams (Washington Wizards, Philadelphia 76ers, New York Knicks, New Orleans Pelicans, and Cleveland Cavaliers). Lastly, it sponsors the WNBA’s Washington Mystics.
Its most notable partnership is with the New Orleans Saints. The two parties agreed in 2021 to a major deal that sees Caesars receive naming rights to the Saints’ home stadium, now known as Caesars Superdome.
“We’ve had a strong relationship with the New Orleans Saints for nearly two decades, and we are thrilled with the opportunity to strengthen it and celebrate our commitment to the city, the state, and the entire Gulf Coast region,” Caesars CEO Tom Reeg said at the time of the announcement.
FanDuel
FanDuel, the official Arizona license partner for the Phoenix Suns, also sponsors the following NBA teams: Los Angeles Lakers, Brooklyn Nets, Cleveland Cavaliers, Memphis Grizzlies, Portland Trail Blazers, and Orlando Magic.
They also sponsor NHL teams (Detroit Red Wings, Buffalo Sabres, and New Jersey Devils), NFL teams (Indianapolis Colts, Denver Broncos, Buffalo Bills, and Baltimore Ravens), and MLB teams (Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees).
In addition, it sponsors and has a branded sportsbook in the DC United (MLS) home stadium and sponsors the WNBA’s New York Liberty.
PointsBet
PointsBet is one of the only sportsbooks to sponsor a Premier League Lacrosse team after entering into a partnership with the Colorado Mammoth. It also sponsors the Austin FC of MLS.
PointsBet’s Big 4 sports partnerships include NHL teams (Detroit Red Wings and Colorado Avalanche), MLB teams (Detroit Tigers), NBA teams (Detroit Pistons, Denver Nuggets, and Indiana Pacers), and NFL teams (Chicago Bears and Indianapolis Colts).
PointsBet also has a partnership with the University of Colorado. The school was the first to partner with a sportsbook following the legalization of sports betting in Colorado in 2020.
