Nimisha Priya, an Indian nurse from Kerala, is confronting a death sentence in Yemen for the murder of Talal Abdo Mahdi, a Yemeni national. The incident revolves around Nimisha injecting sedatives into Mahdi in an attempt to retrieve her passport from him. This all started back in 2018 when Nimisha received the death penalty, a decision she contested in Yemen’s Supreme Court. Unfortunately, her plea was dismissed on November 13, 2023. Nimisha’s mother has sought permission from the Delhi High Court to travel to Yemen, aiming to negotiate “blood money” as compensation to save her daughter’s life. For the initiative travel to Yemen has been banned for Indian nationals since 2017 due to the civil war in the Arab nation. Read to know the entire matter about Priya and her case.

    Who Is Nimisha Priya?

Nimisha is a resident of the Palakkad district of Kerala, In 2014 she moved to Yemen with her husband perhaps even before. However, some financial crisis led her husband and children to return, but Nimisha stayed in Yemen. She approached a Yemeni national, Talal Abdo Mahdi, to open her clinic. According to local law, only Yemeni nationals can apply for the licensing process. However, she did not get any help from Talal and in 2015, opened her clinic with the help of her friend Abdul Hanan.

According to Nimisha, as per a report in The Times-News when she started earning from the clinic, Talal began asking for his share and started harassing her. She even said that Talal made fake marriage documents and claimed that Nimisha was his wife. After getting frustrated she also filed a complaint In 2016 to the police, after which he was arrested. Soon after he came out of jail, he took hold of Nimisha’s passport. As per the Times Now Report in 2017 in an attempt to retrieve her passport, she injected Mahdi with sedatives resulting in his death. She sought Abdul Hanan’s help and the duo chopped his body and disposed it in a water tank.

What Options Does Nimisha Have Now?

The Delhi High Court has been notified by the Central Government that only the President of Yemen has the authority to grant mercy for Nimisha’s death sentence. Last year, Nimisha Priya’s mother and the ‘Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council’ petitioned the high court, urging the government to engage in diplomatic efforts and negotiate with the victim’s family on Nimisha Priya’s behalf. The goal was to save her life by promptly fulfilling the legal requirement of paying blood money. This information was reported by PTI.
